Elon Musk was forced to put restrictions on X and its AI chatbot, Grok, after its image generator sparked outrage around the world. Grok created non-consensual sexualized images, prompting some countries to ban the bot.

Elon Musk's social media company X says it will block its AI chatbot Grok from creating explicit images of real people after governments around the world launched investigations into the feature.
Dani Pinter, the chief legal officer and director of the Law Center for the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, said X failed to pull abusive images from its AI training material and should have banned users requesting illegal content. “This was an entirely predictable and avoidable atrocity,” Pinter said.
Malaysia and Indonesia have blocked access to Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok after regulators said the tool was repeatedly used to generate sexually explicit, nonconsensual deepfake images. Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs ordered the restriction on Jan.
Elon Musk says xAI’s Grok has not generated explicit images of minors as lawmakers and countries move to restrict or ban the chatbot.
Bowing to pressure, the company said it would restrict X users from generating explicit images of real people in jurisdictions where such content is illegal.
Ashley St. Clair, 27, said the sexually exploitive deepfake images of her caused her humiliation and emotional distress.
The move follows backlash from the government and an Ofcom investigation, after some were found to use the tool to generate sexualised images of people.
